Ethiopia Continues to Suppress Protests

10/28/2020 Ethiopia (International Christian Concern) – Demonstrators in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia’s capital city, are being prevented from protesting what they claim are scores of ethnically-motivated killings in recent months. Organizers had planned protests for Wednesday, October 28th but were blocked by police from accessing their headquarters and traveling to various protest locations on Tuesday, according to reports by Amnesty International, a human rights watchdog. The organizers are members of the National Movement of Amhara, a political party at odds with the current administration. Founded in 2018 for the purpose of “protecting the rights and interests of the Amhara people,” party leadership announced on Tuesday that the protests were being cancelled after Ethiopian security forces ...

North Korean Christians Brutally Tortured for Their Faith

10/28/2020 North Korea (International Christian Concern) – It is no secret that North Korean Christians are facing one of the harshest regimes when it comes to Christian persecution. A recent report by the London-based Korea Future Initiative (KFI) further confirms the atrocities done to North Korean Christians once arrested. KFI conducted 117 interviews with survivors, witnesses, and perpetrators, all of those who escaped North Korea, on their experience of religious persecution, dating from 1990 until 2019. More than 200 Christians were identified as victims, their age ranging from 3 years old to 80 years old. One story shows how a man who converted to Christianity claimed to have been imprisoned into a metal cage measuring only 3ft by 4ft wide with bars ‘heated with electricity’. While ...

Why India Deserves to be Labeled as a Country of Particular Concern, Part 2

By Matias Perttula 10/27/2020 Washington, D.C. (International Christian Concern) – A few weeks ago, I published a piece arguing why India deserves to be labeled as a Country of Particular Concern. While State Department has not yet announced a decision on the designation, the case merits a reiteration as Secretary of State Mike Pompeo’s visits the region this week. When any country is labeled as a CPC, the US (by law) takes action against the persecuting country to varying degrees including possible sanctions as described in the 1998 IRF Act. In the case of India, since it has been recommended by the United States Commission on International Religious Freedom (USCIRF) as a CPC for the first time since 2004, it is possible that that this single recommendation may prompt serious consideratio...

More Aid Needed for Chin Christian IDPs and Refugees

10/27/2020 Myanmar (International Christian Concern) – On October 21, U.S. refugee and immigration advocates called for more help for ethnic Chin Christians internally displaced in Myanmar, and those who have fled to neighboring India and Malaysia. According to Crux Now, the groups are advocating for greater access by Myanmar’s military for relief workers to reach internally displaced Christians at numerous camps set up in Chin state; better integration into society of Myanmar Christian refugees now in camps in India and Malaysia; and an opportunity for them to enter the United States as refugees suffering from religious persecution. Given the ongoing Burmese Army’s campaign to purge Rakhine of its Rohingya Muslim population, hundreds of thousands of refugees have fled to nearby Asian cou...

From India to the Rest of the World!

10/26/2020 Washington D.C. (International Christian Concern) – In late 2018, International Christian Concern started its Bikes and Bibles campaign to greatly increase the effectiveness of church planters in India. In the last year, that program has produced 4,000+ new churches and fellowships. That’s 4,000+ new Christian fellowships in a primarily Hindu nation! Now, we are going beyond India to reach the rest of the world! We’re preparing to send out another round of evangelists and church planters to share the Gospel on the frontlines through our initiative called Life in the Lockdown. Through this campaign, we are starting numerous short-term Gospel campaigns. We often work in very dangerous, fundamentalist Muslim areas. In these countries, converts to Christianity lose everything. Our ...

Weekly Harassment Becomes the New Norm for Sichuan Church

10/26/2020 China (International Christian Concern) – An elder and a worshipper from Sichuan’s heavily persecuted Early Rain Covenant Church (ERCC) were taken away again during the Sunday service yesterday. Elder Li Yingqiang, who only recently moved back with his family to Sichuan to shepherd the house church, after being forced to live in his hometown in Hubei, has been closely watched and harassed by the local authorities. On October 24, Li was taken away by the police around 8:30 am during ERCC online worship service. He only was able to return home at 3 pm, when the service was already over. His Twitter account, which he uses to share updates about his family, was also attacked and he has not been able to recover his account. Around the same time yesterday, another ERCC member Xiao Luo...

One Year Since Baghdadi’s Death

10/26/2020 Syria (International Christian Concern) – Today marks the one-year anniversary of a US military raid which left Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi, the self-declared Caliph and mastermind of ISIS, dead. A year later, ISIS has not resurrected itself to a comparable level before their defeat but the consequences of their genocide against religious minorities remain deeply impactful. The question of justice remains in the minds of many victims, most of whom were either Yezidis or Christians. Baghdadi is dead, but the ideology of ISIS persists and the identity of many fighters remain unknown. Even if infrastructure is eventually repaired, it is this combination that removes what little confidence there is for the victims to return home after displacement. Many often ask, how can they return home...

ICC Leads the Outcry on China

10/23/2020 Washington D.C. (International Christian Concern) – “Religious scholars and imams were some of the first to be detained [by the government]. Even mothers of young children have been taken without warning, and their children have been put in orphanages…a plan to keep Uyghur children under state control,” Zubayra Shamseden of the Uyghur Human Rights Project shared at a webinar event hosted by ICC. She described the horrible way the CCP had strategically targeted her religious community. The Falun Gong and Uyghur communities have experienced the brunt of China’s despicable organ harvesting trade and concentration camps. ICC hosted three virtual events through June and July, covering the history of China’s animus toward religion from 1949 to the present day. During the first...

Family of Christian Sentenced to Death for Blasphemy in Pakistan Goes into Hiding

10/25/2020 Pakistan (International Christian Concern) – According to the Independent Catholic News (ICN), the wife and family of Asif Pervaiz have gone into hiding after Pervaiz was sentenced to death for allegedly committing blasphemy. Pervaiz was awarded the death sentence on September 8, 2020, nearly seven years after his arrest. “She is in hiding because she feels threatened,” Release International, an organization that supports persecuted Christians, told ICN. “She is trying to keep her three sons and daughter safe.” On October 2, 2013, a Muslim named Saeed Ahmeed Khokar accused Pervaiz of sending him blasphemous text messages from his mobile phone. Blasphemy charges under Sections 295-A, 295-B, and 295-C of Pakistan’s Penal Code were registered against Pervaiz at the Green Town Polic...
